What You Study in BS Computer Science: A Semester-by-Semester Guide

A four-year BS Computer Science moves from programming fundamentals and maths in the first year to data structures, databases and operating systems in the second, then networks, software engineering and AI, finishing with a final year project and electives.

Year 1: foundations

Programming Fundamentals, Object Oriented Programming, Digital Logic Design, Calculus, Differential Equations and Applied Physics, alongside English, communication skills and general courses.

Year 2: core computer science

Data Structures, Computer Organisation and Assembly Language, Discrete Structures, Linear Algebra, Database Systems, Operating Systems, Design and Analysis of Algorithms, and Probability and Statistics.

Year 3: systems and intelligence

Theory of Automata, Computer Networks, Software Design and Analysis, Numerical Computing, Software Engineering, Parallel and Distributed Computing, and Artificial Intelligence.

Year 4: specialise and build

A two-part Final Year Project, Information Security, Professional Practices and several CS electives. At RCCS, Project-I needs at least 100 earned credit hours and a CGPA of 2.0 or above.

Is BSCS right for you?

  • You enjoy logic puzzles and building things
  • You are comfortable with university-level maths
  • You want careers such as software developer, data analyst, network or security specialist

Frequently asked questions

How many credit hours does BSCS need?

At RCCS, at least 130 credit hours including all core courses, with a CGPA of at least 2.00.

Do I need maths for BSCS?

Yes. The degree includes calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, discrete structures and statistics, so ICS or FSc Pre-Engineering is the usual preparation.
